Celebrated for his “pure, glowing tenor,” Michael Petruccelli is in demand for roles ranging from early music to contemporary Australian opera, and appears regularly with orchestras and festivals around the country. For Opera Australia, he has sung Pang (Turandot), Stephen Goldring (The Eighth Wonder) and Pedro (Two Weddings, One Bride), as well as Septimus (Theodora—Pinchgut Opera collaboration). Having previously sung Goro in the company’s touring production of Madama Butterfly, he reprised the role on the main stage in 2026, before making his New Zealand debut in a semi-staged concert performance with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
Michael’s roles with Victorian Opera includeTicon (Káťa Kabanová), Pirelli (Sweeney Todd—Dubai season), Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor) andBeppe (Pagliacci). He performed Almaviva (The Barber of Seville) for West Australian Opera, and has appeared with Pinchgut Opera as Jason in Medée and Aquillo in Farnace. Several busy seasons as a member of Oper Frankfurt’s principal ensemble featured roles such as The Italian Singer (Capriccio), Basilio/Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro), Graf von Lerma (Don Carlo), and Remendado (Carmen).
An accomplished interpreter of contemporary opera, Michael has been closely associated with new Australian works. He won a Green Room Award for his starring role as The Stranger in Jonathan Mills’ opera Eucalyptus, a co-production between Australian Opera, Victorian Opera, Perth Festival and Brisbane Festival. He was also involved in productions of Richard Mills’ Galileo and Deborah Cheetham’s Parrwang Lifts the Sky for Victorian Opera, Voss for State Opera South Australia, and Mary Finsterer’s Antarctica for Sydney Chamber Opera.
Michael has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Handel’s Messiah, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in Haydn’s The Creation, and the Sydney Philharmonia in Bach’s St John Passion, with further repertoire including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Bruckner’s Te Deum.
