Dale Ferguson

Dale is a Melbourne-based theatre, set and costume designer who has worked with all of Australia’s leading theatre and opera companies, with additional West End, Broadway and international opera credits during a career spanning over thirty years.

Highlights have included the Broadway transfer of the Belvoir / Malthouse production of Exit the King, where he received Drama Desk and Tony Award nominations, and the recently acclaimed Belvoir production of Counting and Cracking. This seminal work about four generations of an Australian Sri Lankan family received multiple literary and theatre awards including Dale’s second Helpmann Award for Best Scenic Design.

Dale’s credits for Belvoir also include The Jungle and the Sea, Sami in Paradise, The Blind Giant is Dancing, Brothers Wreck and The Power of Yes. Other theatre credits include Death of a Salesman (GWB / Andrew Henry Presents); 37, Come Rain or Come Shine, An Ideal Husband, The Weir, The Speechmaker, The Crucible and Top Girls (Melbourne Theatre Company); A German Life (Adelaide Festival); Emerald City and L’Appartement (Queensland Theatre); Away, Brothers Wreck, Night on Bald Mountain, Dance of Death and Timeshare (Malthouse Theatre); Exit the King (Broadway); and Cosi, Away and Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Sydney Theatre Company). His opera credits are Tosca (Opera Queensland and WA Opera), The Magic Flute (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Anything Goes (Opera Australia), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2021 Adelaide Festival, Houston Grand Opera, Canadian Opera).

Dale received his first Helpmann Award for August: Osage County (Melbourne Theatre Company, 2009). He has also received a number of Green Room Awards, most recently in 2022 for Because the Night (Malthouse Theatre, 2021).

Dale is a Lecturer in Performance Design at the Victorian College of the Arts.
